Let's Talk About Models

A big element of taking photos is finding subjects to shoot. It can be really daunting to go up to someone and ask to take a photo of them. This was a photo that a girl asked to take of me on the sidelines and I wanted to share the awesome way she did it.

First of all, asking politely to take someone's photo is important. If they say no, don't bug them. The girl approached me very sweetly and told me she wanted to take a picture of me to show the people who work the sidelines at Gator games. It's always good to add why you are taking their photo, where it's going and who is going to see it. These are all important in building your credibility.

Now, if you want to ask someone to model for you cold turkey, here are some good ways to do it.

  1. Give them a little note in class telling them you are a photographer and would love to photograph them. Put your number as well so they can contact you. (This actually worked for my friend multiple times!)
  2. Reach out via social media! If you see a model posting locally, let them know in a direct message that you want to take photos of them. A lot of models communicate over social media.
  3. Good ole' fashioned asking. If you see someone and want them to model for you, just ask. You might get some no's, but the yes's will be worth it.

It's always good to shed your shyness when asking people to model. Be confident! Know what you are talking about and be proud to do what you do.

If you still have questions, this article is a great read and gives some tips I would definitely recommend.
